We introduce volumes and capacities for school age students. Historically these are measures of grain, or valuable liquids like beer and oil. In the modern world, there are as usual two general systems of measuring such volumes or capacities--the metrical or SI system based on the litre, and the US or Imperial systems based on the gallon and various subdivisions such as quart, pint and cup. However there is a bit of a cross over with the use of metrical cups, especially useful in the kitchen.

This is a topic that lends itself happily to playing around with containers, water and pouring, and young children can strengthen their understanding of our numerical system and arithmetic with hands-on exploration and playing around.
