Learn how to make a Vodka and Tonic worthy of being called a James Bond cocktail using Stoli 100 Vodka, Q Tonic Water, Angostura Bitters and a lemon peel. The series, Cocktails and Pussy Galore, shows you how to drink like 007 using the Ian Fleming books (not the movies) as the source, which takes you beyond the typical James Bond Martini.
Like the Gin & Tonic (youtu.be/4kDoh11QzQU), Bond enjoyed Vodka Tonics when he was alone and not trying to impress anyone. He did seem to prefer one over the other. He had 8 Vodka Tonics throughout the books and only half the number of Gin & Tonics, but to be fair he had the majority of his Vodka Tonics in one drunken evening in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Although, he alternated between Vodka Tonics and Gin & Tonics in Goldfinger. I guess it was just whatever struck his fancy.
This particular recipe is a combination of recipes that Bond liked and it really helps the drink to stand on its own two feet. Vodka and Tonic Water alone makes for a stiff Tonic Water. It offers none of the interplay of botanicals and quinine you're used to with a Gin & Tonic. But when you add the bitters and the lemon twist, all of the sudden there are flavors coming together to savor.
It may not match a classic Gin & Tonic, but it's not supposed to. The same way a Kangaroo Kicker (youtu.be/joM2W46SMy0) is not supposed to be the same as a Dry Martini (youtu.be/hIMrC9ezHYA). If done wrong, the Vodka versions will be lacking the subtly and presence of the Gin counterparts, but if done right they can be enjoyed for what they are. Cheers!
Recipe:
2 oz Vodka
2 dashes of Aromatic Bitters
5-6 oz Tonic Water
garnish Lemon Twist
Build in a glass over ice. Add Vodka, Bitters, top with Tonic Water. Garnish with Lemon Twist.
