Fauquier ENT | Vocal Cord Swell Test: Easy At Home Way to Check for Vocal Cord Injury @fauquierent | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 13 seconds ago
When a vocal cord injury is suspected, the ideal way to check for any damage is to look at the vocal cords. This normally is accomplished by an ENT doctor using a flexible endoscope. However, if the vocal cords become swollen or develop an abnormal bump whether a nodule, cyst, or polyp, there is an easy way to check and monitor for these changes without visiting a doctor. Known as vocal cord swell tests, you start the test by singing very softly “Happy Birthday” at a comfortable falsetto pitch. To reiterate, sing quietly!!! If any pitch breaks or onset delays occur within your usual upper pitch range, some type of abnormal bump or swelling is present. Examples of pitch breaks and onset delays along with how it looks under endoscopy included.

For singers and other professional voice users, regularly performing vocal swell tests can also help prevent a chronic vocal cord injury. It allows you to monitor the health of your vocal cords and quickly detect the presence of any possible swelling which could lead to a more serious vocal cord injury. With early detection, you can quickly respond to any warning signs with appropriate interventions, thereby avoiding the need for future aggressive (and prolonged) medical treatment.

Vocal cord examination is performed via trans-nasal endoscopy:

One of the first things to do (other than voice rest) to help recover the voice is straw phonation exercises:
