'James Can Eat' is an intriguing new documentary that dives deep into the high-stakes, stomach-stretching world of competitive eating, chronicling the rise of James Webb, Australia's top-ranked eater, as he takes on the global greats in pursuit of the crown.
This is the fifth time I have had the chance of chatting with filmmaker Vlad Yudin, whose eye for intense, character-driven stories once again takes center stage. Known for acclaimed sports documentaries like 'Generation Iron', 'Ronnie Coleman: The King' and 'The Hurt Business', Yudin turns his focus to a different kind of physical endurance, one that involves extreme training, controversy and thousands of calories consumed in minutes.
At the heart of 'James Can Eat' is James Webb, currently ranked fourth in the world, whose journey from sidelined soccer player to viral sensation is as inspiring as it is outrageous. From inhaling 59.5 donuts in one sitting to overcoming a near-paralyzing illness, Webb’s story unfolds through raw family moments, candid reflections, and behind-the-scenes access to his grueling preparation, all while chasing the elusive goal of defeating reigning legend Joey Chestnut.
This isn’t just a story about food. As Yudin explored Webb’s world, he also uncovered the deeper infrastructure of the sport, including Major League Eating (MLE), the official body that sanctions professional eating contests around the globe. With rankings, rivalries and a rapidly expanding fan base, competitive eating is evolving and Yudin captures that momentum in full force.
One of 'James Can Eat's most revealing turns is its look at how the sport is breaking into new territory. Yudin reveals in our conversation that for the first time ever, competitive eating will be featured at the Olympia Expo in Las Vegas, NV, the mecca of bodybuilding and fitness, on the weekend of October 10, 2025. This crossover moment, blending muscle and metabolism, marking a new era where feats of eating earn a place alongside feats of strength.
'James Can Eat' is ultimately a story of consumption, resilience and the human hunger for greatness. Through Yudin’s lens, Webb’s extraordinary path is both shocking and deeply human, an unfiltered look at what it really takes to be number one when the only limit is your own body.
