I spoke with Athletic Director Jonathan Poag about how faith, success and a spirit of philadelphie shape Colorado Christian University softball, not only within the team but also in how players approach opponents with a distinctly Christian mindset.
As of the time of the interview, the Cougars held a 46-2 record for the 2026 season. The run also represents the longest active winning streak in NCAA softball.
Christian faith has always been the central force behind Colorado Christian University Softball as the program made both school and RMAC history this Spring Semester, setting new marks for consecutive victories.
Colorado Christian opened a conference doubleheader on Saturday with a 13-4 win over Black Hills State, then completed the sweep later that day with a 5-3 victory. Those results marked the program’s 35th and 36th straight wins, establishing a new school record for the longest winning streak in team history.
At the center of the program is a culture defined not only by skill and experience but by a clear Christian identity under 81-year-old head coach Larry Hays, a Hall of Fame figure with more than 1,500 career wins.
Hays explained that the team’s strength goes beyond ability, emphasizing that their faith provides perspective while their shared culture builds unity, allowing them to play with freedom and confidence.
Players echoed that sentiment, describing faith as the foundation that steadies them and gives them the ability to compete without pressure while keeping their focus on a higher purpose.
Senior catcher Leah Garcia described how that foundation allows the team to remain composed and centered, shaping both their mindset and motivation.
Junior pitcher and third baseman Elyse McMullin said the team is constantly challenged by opponents but relies on a simple approach rooted in trust, preparation and shared belief. She also highlighted that the team regularly worships together, supports one another and plays with the understanding that their efforts are an expression of their faith in Jesus Christ.
This combination of belief, discipline and competitive drive has propelled Colorado Christian into one of the most successful programs in college softball this season while also elevating the university’s athletic profile.
With both school and conference records now surpassed, the Cougars continue their pursuit of excellence as they move toward postseason play.
