Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, as a grand epic orchestral version, arranged and produced by Idan Schneider. This grand orchestral arrangement takes the song’s famous royal imagery and turns it into an old-world biblical tragedy of glory, sin, judgment, repentance, forgiveness, and love.

Viva La Vida is one of Coldplay’s most powerful songs: a portrait of a fallen king looking back on lost power, broken glory, and the fragile nature of empire. Its images of bells, cavalry, choirs, revolution, and vanished kingdoms already feel almost mythological, as if the song is remembering an ancient ruler whose crown became too heavy to bear.

For this version, I wanted to take that world and transform it into a grand orchestral story inspired by the biblical King David. The visual journey begins with David’s early glory, from the courage of David and Goliath to the rise of a chosen king. It then moves into his fall: the story of Bathsheba, Uriah, guilt, judgment, and the prophet Nathan’s accusation. The ending, as the story tells us, is well-deserved punishment and suffering, but also true repentance. I chose to end it with forgiveness, and the quiet love that remains in old age.

Musically, I built this arrangement around strong violin and viola staccatos, rhythmic orchestral motion, harp, noble horns, timpani, piatti, and a large symphonic rise. I chose to take the famous Viva La Vida rhythm and drive it using string staccatos (in the stronger parts) and Mediterranean guitars (in the softer parts). The feeling I tried to give is royal grandeur, inner conflict, and eventually a final surge of light, power, and orchestral glory.

The goal was not to make a modern trailer remix, but a serious old-world orchestral transformation: biblical, royal, dramatic, and human. A story of a king who rises in glory, falls through sin, is wounded by judgment, and still finds mercy, memory, and love.

The images used in the video are inspired by Baroque, Renaissance and classical oil painting: artists such as Rubens, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and other masters of shadow, movement, flesh, light, and sacred drama. I imagined Viva La Vida as a painted biblical epic: David before Goliath, David as king, David and Bathsheba, Nathan’s accusation, forgiveness after repentance, and finally an old king finding comfort in love beneath the weight of memory. I tried to make the biblical story royal, dramatic, and human; a story of a king who rises in glory, falls through sin, is wounded by judgment, and still finds mercy, memory, and love.
