r/place was the 2022 april fools event of reddit where each user could change one pixel every 5 minutes on an expanding 1000x1000, then 1000x2000 and on the last day 2000x2000 canvas.
A reoccuring theme was modifying shapes to represent tiny crewmates from Among Us.
This video highlights them to give an overview where they appeared the most.
Watch in highest resolution if possible.
This is not regular "content" for my channel but i thought it is interesting to see the dynamic of that event in a simple overview.
The video was rendered from a 6000x6000 source to 4k to represent the second phase on most monitors well enough but video compression of youtube will likely make it hard to make out individual objects.
It is likely underreporting the numbers because a high threshold was used and only amonglings with valid legs and backpacks in the same color are considered valid to limit false detections.
Rotated and mirrored ones are detected though.
An opencv canny edgefilter was used to detect the shapes and several different templates in different rotations were used for detection on a 6000x6000 scaled contour image.
This analysis took half a day on a 32 core epyc 7601 and created 100GB of data out of just 5GB of raw images...
