Passacaglia (“The Guardian Angel”) for solo violin by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (H.I.F. Biber)
"This painting hangs in Gallery 16, where Art of Elan normally performs, and that particular gallery houses a lot of older paintings. I always find it to be a place of quiet contemplation, which I am missing desperately right now amidst the chaos of the world.⠀

The little-known Baroque composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber wrote a series of "Mystery Sonatas" for solo violin, each depicting a different part of the rosary, along with a closing Passacaglia that's been nicknamed "The Guardian Angel." I find this Passacaglia to be incredibly calming, meditative, almost hypnotic. I decided to play an abridged version for this virtual series to really illuminate the contemplative quality of Zurbaran’s painting. They were both created within 20 years of each other so I thought it would be a good match."⠀
