An emerging virus is the agent of a new or previously unrecognized disease. In this lecture we discuss the anthropogenic factors that drive virus emergence, the four types of virus-host interactions, and descriptions of specific emerging virus infections including those caused by poliovirus, Nipah and Hendra viruses, Junin virus, Ebolavirus, and the coronaviruses SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2. All these viruses came from Nature, not from a lab.
