Jean Dubé, piano

Väinö Raitio (1891-1945) was a Finnish modernist composer who is little known today, largely due to the prominence of National Romanticism in Finnish art music of the early 1900s. To the extent that his name is recognized, it is for eight tone poems written in the 1920s which bear the influence of Alexander Scriabin. (Several of these orchestral works can also be heard on YouTube, including "Joutsenet", "Fantasia ecstatica", and "Fantasia poetica".)

The little of Raitio's work that has been brought into the public domain is mostly from his earlier, more traditionally Romantic works and exists only in manuscript, as is the case with his 1913 Toccata in G minor (which remains unpublished.) Nevertheless, it is a fine work in its own right and would make a perfect encore for any concert pianist!

For those interested in playing this piece, the score can be found on Raitio's IMSLP page, under the link "Toccata, Op. 1": imslp.org/wiki/Category:Raitio%2C_V%C3%A4in%C3%B6
