How did serial killer Bruce McArthur get away with murdering several gay brown-skinned men in Toronto’s gay village without police investigation?
Between 2010-2017 several middle-aged, brown-skinned men began vanishing from Toronto’s LGBTQ neighborhood, The Village. They shared similarities like age, facial features, and bars frequented. Journalists and community members began wondering if these disappearances were suspicious and whether they were linked.
On January 18th, 2018, nearly eight years after the first disappearance, police arrested 66-year-old Bruce McArthur on first-degree murder charges. Over the next three months, McArthur would be charged with a total of eight counts of murder, six of his victims were of South Asian or Middle Eastern descent. A ninth victim, reportedly with a Middle Eastern background, was saved by the police on the day of McArthur’s arrest. Many of the victims were immigrants and refugees who came from countries where being gay is a criminal offense and punishable by death.
Interviewing community members, activists, journalists and the mayor of Toronto, Village of the Missing is a multi-layered exploration of how McArthur was able to commit his horrific acts of violence in the heart of Canada’s most progressive city.
The film takes us on an emotional journey to Turkey where we meet a group of LGBT refugees who have fled their home countries in fear for their lives. They are waiting to come to a safe place like Toronto. They hope that in Canada they will find people they can trust and live in a place where they can finally be open about their sexuality.
In a city that prides itself on being an open and safe place for marginalized people, how does something like this happen?
