Since 2020, China has been implementing a nationwide social credit system that monitors the behavior of every citizen and uses the data to score individuals and companies on their trustworthiness. The Alipay online payment system, used by a third of the country's population, grades the behavior, preferences, spending habits, and academic qualifications of users to determine the Zhima or Sesame* credit score ranging from 350 to 950. A high Sesame credit score grants privileges like preferential loan terms and quicker access to public services. However, those with low credit scores face problems such as restricted access to loans and public services. Critics argue that the system risks widening social class divides and being used as a tool to silence dissent.
*Zhima Credit also known as Sesame Credit is a private company-run credit scoring and loyalty program system developed by Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba Group. It uses data from Alibaba's services to compile its score.
