This video is part of my series on video gear reviews. The object of this review is the RODE VideoMic. The VideoMic is a shotgun mic that attaches to cameras that have a 3.5mm mini plug audio in plug, and is a major upgrade from the built in camera mics. The best thing about the Shotgun style mics is it captures the audio directly in front of the mic and not to the sides, so you can eliminate a lot of background noise typically found in a lot of YouTube Videos.
The Rode VideoMic was purchased used from eBay, in very used condition, and the dampening bands were all missing. The Rode customer service was incredible considering the age of this Mic, and the fact that I was not the original owner. I was able to get the proper bands from them, and the mic now works like it's brand new.
I really like the richness of the sound the mic provides. It has so much more bass than my other mics. I typically shoot my videos with duel mics, and hopefully this summer I'll be able to add a third mic (Zoom H4n digital recorder) which will not be imput into the camera, but synced in post production with full stereo effects which would be nice at the range, as well as a field recorder.
Because I use 2 mics, and my camera only has a single 3.5 input plug, I have to use an XLR adapter. The only XLR adapters I trust are made by Studio 1 and I have two models. The one I use in nearly all my 2011 videos is an under camera model, but for this video I had to use my backup shotgun mic which is around 5 years old (audio technica), and it does not have a cold shoe adapter on the suspension system, so I just mounted it directly to the Mic Stand and ran the mic right up to me as close as possible, which meant I needed to use my user and worn out Studio 1 XLR Adapter (belt model) recently the unit was refurbished by the company (they will rebuild XLR adapters to like new for $25 which is a heck of a good deal considering the cost of most of these units). The customer service of Studio 1 is second to none. I will be doing video reviews on both Studio 1 XLR adapters very soon.
