The time I lost everything while bodyboarding.
One day while riding waves on the north shore, a huge set started to roll in. The first wave was around 15 feet. I had three options. Option 1 was to paddle furiously out to sea in hopes that I'd make it past the impact zone (which I was in). Option 2 was to furiously paddle into shore in hopes that I'd make it. Option 3 was to die.
I chose option 1. I paddled and kicked like crazy and used every ounce of my existence to make it past the impact zone. Once I realized I was going to make it, I noticed the larger wave behind the 15 footer before me. That one was around 20 feet and I was in the impact zone yet again. Ducking the wave was out of the question. I was exhausted. I did the only thing I could do.
I turned to the left and paddled like crazy to position myself. The wave came. That monster, gnarly wave. I dropped into the shoulder and pulled in as hard as I could. I thought to myself "fuck, i'm going to get slammed so hard right now". But I didn't.
Instead, I got the hugest barrel of my life. The barrel of the wave was the size of a house and I was right in it. It was LOUD and I was going FAST. The compression blast happened and blew me off the wave. I started to cartwheel on the face and one by one, everything I had was removed. My board, my fins, my rash guard, my shorts, my underwear. poof! I was naked. Crap!
But I was alive . I swam back to shore but not before stepping on a sea urchin. Just great. I didn't care. I walked naked to my car. No shame in my game. Just pain.
The end.
