The First Time I Went Rollerblading
Back in 1990something Rollerblading became all the rage. Remember those? My friends had gotten into it and it looked super fun to me. I was envious of their gallivanting around. I was recently out of high school and had a job so I saved up for a bit and purchased some shiny new, official Rollerblades. They weren't no cheap knockoffs either. I wanted the real deal and they were about 250 dollars. I don't remember which model they were but I do remember them being black with black wheels and ABEC7 bearings. I bought them from the local CHAMPS store. I was super stoked.
I took them home and put them on. They fit nicely, of course. I had spent an hour at the store trying many on. I went into the back yard where there was a perhaps thirty by ten foot concrete slab that I could practice on. Within minutes, I was flying around and confident that I was an absolute genius on blades. "I'm a fuckin' natural!", I professed.
Reinforced by my newfound and self-proclaimed skills, I decided it was time for the open road. My friends and I had recently watched the 1993 movie "Airborne" so my stoke level was high. I went down our short driveway without issue and onto the road which was a bit rough. Down the first hill and no problem. After that was a big, medium-angle, fifty-foot hill which I huffed and puffed up. I got up to the top of the hill and without hesitation, turned around and proceeded to bomb it. It was my Leroy-Jenkins moment of the 90s.
Massive acceleration as I was filled with mirth and adrenaline. That soon turned to fear. No, it turned to great fear. You see, I was only one quarter the way down and I was going faster. I didn't really know how to stop. The shitty brakes that come with Rollerblades are essentially useless past a certain speed. In fact, they become dangerous. I kept going faster and faster and I started to lose control until...until I superman'd it into the earth. Oh, and by earth, I meant asphalt. I super crashed! I had crashed real good!
I limped my way back home and heard my mom yelp as I passed her in the house. "What happened??", she complained. "Nothing, don't worry about it" was my defeated, sarcastic response.
I was pissed off. I went and got my keys to the 1990 Honda Accord EX that I had and riceburned it back to CHAMPS. When I got there, I walked up to the girl who helped me with my Rollerblade purchase and in disbelief, she asked what happened.
As I stood there, still very much bleeding from my arms and legs and still with pieces of road left in my skin, I said "I'm gonna need some pads"
"...and maybe a helmet".
