With the exception of Nathaniel Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra, all the performers on this disc (Ralph Rainger, Edgar Fairchild, Franklyn Baur and the Brox Sisters) were in the original cast of Ziegfeld Follies of 1927, and recorded this medley a month after the N.Y. opening (New Amsterdam Theatre). Had Ruth Etting not been an exclusive Columbia artist, Victor Talking Machine Company could have hired Eddie Cantor and Etting to sing on the recording. Also in the cast: Irene Delroy, Cliff Edwards, Dan Healy, Claire Luce, Andrew Tombes, Albertina Rasch Dancers.
As a two-piano team, Edgar Fairchild & Ralph Rainger also appeared on Broadway in “Queen High,” “Rosalie” and “Cross Your Heart.” In the early 1930s Rainger migrated to Hollywood where, as song writer, he became one of the film industry’s greatest assets. In March 1930 Fairchild had an engagement that took him to London with fellow pianist Robert Lindholm. What began as an eight-week engagement lasted for two years. Upon Fairchild’s return he teamed up with Adam Carroll, with whom he had performed a decade earlier in the Original Piano Trio. They made phonograph records and were featured in the original “On Your Toes” and “Babes in Arms.” Fairchild subsequently had a very successful career as film and radio conductor, best known as musical director for Eddie Cantor, former star of Ziegfeld’s Follies.
