Started two Victorian novels in Victober, finished the second well into November. Enjoyed both books even if they tend to take me longer to get through than most things I read.

These were two deeply feminist novels each dealing with the plight of middle-class women, the importance of maintaining a good name and the necessity of marriage.

The more I read of Gissing's novels, the less I want to find out about his life. He has a uniquely pessimistic view of life in Victorian London, unleavened by whimsy or any kind of breeziness. He also maintains a deeply cynical view of romance and its utility.

I feel like I've read Mrs Gaskell upside down and avoided her two best known works so far. I will try to get to them as I find her writing less fussy than some of her more admired contemporaries.
