One of the reasons I went vegan was to respect the personal choice of others. After all, if animals were given the choice they wouldn’t choose to walk into the gas chamber or the stun box. They wouldn’t choose to be selectively bred, for their bodies to be mutilated, their reproductive systems exploited or for their babies to be forcibly taken from them.
Everything we do to animals involves their subjugation and the denial of their best interests, preferences or what they would choose to do if given the opportunity to have a choice. So when we talk about personal choice, do we really care about the freedoms of others, or are we simply trying to deflect from the fact that morally we have no justification for the needless suffering that we choose to cause to animals?
