On Ambrym Island, one of the 80 volcanic islands that make up the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, lies the remote village of Endu. Here, ancient traditions still shape everyday life. When Gedeon, a village elder, named his daughter after a foreign friend, the community prepared a ceremony to make their bond official — a symbolic act of kinship that transcends cultures.
Every year on February 15, another extraordinary ritual takes place in the nearby village of Lamakara: the celebration of the cargo cult. Once spread across all of Melanesia, this unique belief system has nearly disappeared, but in Lamakara it remains alive. Villagers gather to honor their ancestors, share food, and keep alive a ritual that has fascinated the outside world for decades.
From spiritual ceremonies of kinship to one of the last surviving cargo cult celebrations, Vanuatu’s people show how tradition, identity, and resilience continue to thrive on these volcanic islands.
