(AP) U.S. Vice President JD Vance downplayed an AI video President Donald Trump posted on social media over the weekend featuring a stylized imaginary attack on Iran's Kharg Island, which is key to its oil exports and Trump has repeatedly threatened.
Speaking to reporters before flying to Michigan for a rally Monday, Vance said, "Well, you know, like the president likes to switch it up on social media a little bit. He would be the first to say he doesn't make announcements about military actions on social media."
"But I think that he's sending a message to the Iranians, look, we know that they continue to shoot at commercial shipping. We continue to have a lot of tools at our disposal to prevent them from doing so or at least cut down on them from going so. And that's what the president is saying," Vance added.
Despite the vice president's comment, Trump makes virtually all of his announcements on military action and most other matters on his social media account.
Vance's comments came as American forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on the Strait of Hormuz Sunday, marking the first military action in a month.
Vance also tried to clarify Trump’s critique on social media that data center opponents would leave their communities “backwards and poor.”
The vice president told reporters that Trump was stressing the importance of data centers for artificial intelligence and that “ 99% of the backlash to data centers has come in areas where building a data center means higher utility and higher electricity (prices) for the people on the ground.”
Vance said that companies building data centers should build power plants as part of their projects in accordance with the administration’s policies.
"If you build a data center, you should be putting power back into the grid, not taking it out, and if that is happening, I don't think the data centers are that controversial,” Vance said.
