"You are a rainbow of diverse colors, Valparaíso, you great harbor..." - This verse was dedicated to his hometown by the poet Pablo Neruda.
Yes, it is the colors that catch the eye first when entering the harbor of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town of Valparaíso, from the Pacific Ocean. The colors of the houses, boldly vibrant. Mostly small houses. They seem to grow up the 27 hills that border the wide bay. Houses that often seem to cling to the edge with just a little finger, sometimes even leaning out over the abyss. And of course, not all are vibrant, but the peeling and rusty shades also belong to the rainbow here. The love of the inhabitants for their city, which they passionately sing about in songs, makes it appear beautiful. Valparaíso is only moderately so under strict art historical scrutiny. So there are hardly any architecturally outstanding old buildings. One hundred years ago, a terrible earthquake devastated the "Paradise Valley," destroying the city.
"Paradise Valley," that's what the Spaniards called the bay on the Pacific coast inhabited by Indians, which they discovered and took possession of in 1536. They built a church on the narrow strip of land, the cross became a symbol of victory. Around the Iglesia La Matriz grew the old town, which is now a World Heritage Site - World Heritage with legacies. The streets here are breathtakingly steep, rising behind the old church, which is now of course not really old anymore. The stairs seem endless, ascending and descending. As a resident of the Cerros, the hills, one needs endurance, and even as a visitor, if one wants to enjoy the view. Neruda compressed the ascent into poetic prose: "How many stairs, how many steps, how many feet on the steps, how many centuries of steps, up and down..." - Stairs are naturally rich in poetry, but the locals prefer, if possible, progress: elevators, "Ascensores." Since the end of the 19th century, they have become a landmark of the city.
Of the formerly 30 Ascensores, 15 are still in operation today, making the way from the valley floor, where traffic jams, to the first hill terrace easier. With slight unease and palpitations, one ascends the small, glazed wooden cabins for the first time, which are pulled up dizzyingly steeply between the houses, often also over streets with steel cables. But when the panorama of Valparaíso opens up before the eyes, the palpitations are no longer associated with unease. And the eye delights in the bewildering overall picture of this lively port city, which opens to the world ocean and, above all, to life.
