Launched in 2020, Wellness on Wheels (WOW) came to life to take care of students' physical and mental health through cycling at Milby High School, located near Valero's Houston refinery. Valero, a founding donor, has invested $75,000 in the program as well as helping to purchase bicycles, helmets and safety gear for the students.
Every Wednesday after school, a group of students pick up their bikes and helmets, then hit the road. During these adventures, students are able to decompress as they cycle around Houston's historic East End and take in the nature of historic neighborhoods and community parks. Not only does this program give the students a chance to get outside and explore through scenic nature rides, it also creates a safe space where students can make new friends and find a support system with each other.
WOW provides an unconventional therapeutic outlet for students, especially those affected by the pandemic. This program, fostering physical and emotional well-being, continues to thrive with Valero's continued commitment to Manchester and Houston's East End.
