Vacuum Bagging is a composite manufacturing process in which vacuum pressure is used during the resin cure cycle. Pressurizing a composite lamination serves several functions. First, it removes air trapped in and between the layers of a laminate. Second it compacts the fiber layers, allowing for efficient force transmission among fiber bundles. This prevents shifting of fiber orientation during the resin cure cycle. Third, by removing the air from the lamination, the humidity level of the laminate is reduced. Finally, and most importantly, the vacuum bagging technique improves the fiber-to-resin ratio in the composite part by eliminating excess resin. Resin Infusion is a related composite manufacturing process, which uses vacuum pressure to drive resin into the laminate.
