What happens when emerging biotechnology begins to blur the line between food and medicine?
Catherine Austin Fitts recounts a Tennessee legislative debate surrounding HB 1894, a 2024 law that defines food containing a vaccine or vaccine material as a drug under the state’s Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Senator Joey Hensley sponsored the companion Senate bill and argued that the legislation was intended to establish safeguards if these technologies reach consumers.
The conversation points to a real and developing area of research: scientists have been investigating plant-based and edible vaccine technologies for years. Importantly, research and development are not the same as products currently being sold in grocery stores, and FDA’s current list of licensed vaccines does not include an edible plant-based vaccine.
It raises a broader question about transparency, regulation, and how emerging technologies involving our food supply should be handled.
