A proposed battery storage facility in Vacaville is drawing concerns from homeowners as the California Energy Commission considers whether the project should move forward. NextEra Energy wants to build the Corby Battery Energy Storage System near Kilkenny and Byrnes roads. The company says the facility could provide enough power for about 250,000 homes.
Homeowners raised concerns Tuesday about fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, the potential effect on property values and whether more studies are needed. The California Energy Commission has hired consultants to examine the project's fire risk.
The commission will hold another public meeting Nov. 18 before its five commissioners vote on the project.
