This school year may look different for some Utah students following the passage of a new law restricting cellphone use during school hours.

The measure, SB69, passed during the 2026 legislative session and was signed by Gov. Spencer Cox on March 18.

The law requires school districts to limit student cellphone access throughout the school day. Previously, students were prohibited from using cellphones only during instructional time.

While the law establishes statewide requirements, individual school districts retain authority to implement their own policies.
