The integration of the USMC F-35B Lightning II aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) represents a major operational milestone, officially bringing fifth-generation stealth capabilities to the ship's Atlantic-based forces.
Following an extensive, multi-year maintenance and modernization period to upgrade its flight deck and combat systems, the Kearsarge successfully conducted its historic first F-35B flight operations in February 2026 with aircraft from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA-542), followed by additional deck landing qualifications with VMFA-533 in May.
