Abstract: Food inequity, especially in American urban areas, is a growing problem that is exacerbated by stagnant wages and food cost inflation. Our team at the System to Achieve Food Equity (SAFE), consisting of wonderful people from 84.51, the Cincinnati community and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, have worked hard to address food and data inequity in Cincinnati. Our project started with assembling large amounts of disparate data into a powerful, publicly available resource in the form of an R package and a data explorer built in Shiny (grapph.shinyapps.io/codec_shiny). From there, our team made data-informed decisions on where and how to intervene.
Our partners at 84.51 developed a meal gap equation designed to identify the specific meal needs in every neighborhood in our county. Through ongoing partnerships, non-profit food providers donate their data (meals provided) to our team so that we can add their interventions to our meal gap pipeline. These synthesized data are compiled and presented in a publicly available dashboard (grapph.shinyapps.io/safe). This monthly-updated dashboard is used by non-profits in Cincinnati so that they can see where their help is most needed to close the meal gap, as well as individuals that can see where food distribution sites are located. Shiny is at the core of the work that SAFE is doing to address hunger in our city.
