In this presentation, Dr Philip Lawton talks about his research, which has focused in recent years on the connection between different ideals across time. He talks through some strands going back to at least the 1960s, and brings them up to some of the 'smart city' governance strategies of today. A key thing he highlight in the talk is the current juncture we find ourselves at. While we could probably argue that urban sustainability was increasingly getting on to the policy agenda, we are seeing signs recently of this being somewhat side-lined through increasing dominance of a form of tech oligarchy.
