With any dig there is always a trade-off between care and speed. Whilst this excavator could easily dig down to the relevant layer in seconds, a gentle approach with a toothless bucket allows for the fastest removal of sediment whilst still taking necessary precautions to minimise any potential damage to fossil material. This approach relies on the skills of the operator and some very good communication.
Cerney Wick:
Palaeocast was granted special access to 2024's excavations at Cerney Wick, allowing us to record media from within the field. On our website, you'll find hours of multimedia captured at different stages throughout the field season. We begin with a podcast that introduces the locality and details the plans for the upcoming dig, this is followed by several days of recording at the site itself and finally a record of the legacy of the year’s fieldwork.
