On Oct. 27, 2023, the USCGC Argus (WMSM-915), was christened and launched. The Argus is the first ship of the Heritage class of new Medium Endurance Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC).
The ship’s sponsor was Capt. (ret.) Beverly Kelley. Kelley was the first woman to command a U.S. warship when she took command of USCGC Cape Newagen (WPB 95318) in 1979.
Christening ceremonies are a centuries-old tradition believed to bring good luck and safe passage to the ship and its crew. This ceremony marks an important milestone both in the life of the ship and the Coast Guard’s recapitalization efforts. The future OPCs will complement the existing National Security Cutters and Fast Response Cutters to carry out our Nation’s most critical maritime safety, security, and stewardship missions.
