For two months the United States military has been quietly running night convoys through the Strait of Hormuz. Fifteen to twenty tankers a night, a southern channel hugging the coast of Oman, continuous Air Force fighter cover, and roughly 10 million barrels of oil a day going back into the global market. The reason it works is electronic, not kinetic: American strikes have degraded Iranian coastal radar and maritime surveillance to the point where the Revolutionary Guard largely cannot see the lane at all.
In this one: the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the loadout CENTCOM just put on camera — APKWS laser-guided rockets at roughly $30,000 a shot against million-dollar missiles, GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs, and a KC-46 Pegasus taking fuel from a KC-135. Plus the Global Hawk family overhead, Aegis destroyers, and the USS George Washington strike group that entered CENTCOM this week as USS Abraham Lincoln headed home after nine months.
