The M240 is the workhorse medium machine gun of the US military. Adopted by the US Army in the late 1970s (initially for vehicles) and phased in to replace the Vietnam-era M60 for infantry in the 1990s, it is a US modification of the legendary Belgian FN MAG 58.
It has an absolute legendary status among soldiers for one primary reason: it rarely jams. While heavy, its gas-operated, open-bolt design is incredibly robust and can chew through thousands of rounds of heavy ammunition without a hiccup.
