The two major items that can be found in this cavern are amulet of lightning and the panpipes. The amulet of lightning shoots powerful blasts and the panpipes freeze your enemies for a limited time. Both consume magic and both can be used multiple times.
You can get both these items by going down the alternate holes in the first room in this video. You'll return to the same room afterwards, so you can get both items and rescue the major in one trip if you know what you're doing.
