In the original Ultima: Runes of Virtue, Empath Abbey was a cool place where you could chat with the programmers in a hidden castle. Here it is a minor dungeon. You get fifty gold as a reward for beating the true lich. I think you can just ignore this place and go to the next cave.
The shield is used like a weapon but it blocks attacks. You can still take damage while using it.
