STORY
We discovered a completely intact 19th-century Brazilian-style palace in Portugal – and inside, time has stood still.
This grand home was built by Joaquim, a man who left for Brazil as a young adventurer, made his fortune in trade, and returned determined to show the world his success. He spared no expense, filling the palace with the finest materials and commissioning some of the most breathtaking painted and carved ceilings we’ve ever seen in Portugal.
His son would later become the village doctor – a man remembered for helping anyone who knocked at his door, whether rich or poor. Through letters, photographs, and official documents scattered across the house, we pieced together the story of this extraordinary family.
They spoke of travels across continents, the public works they funded in the village, and the grand celebrations once held within these very walls. But among these stories lies a darker chapter. During the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, the doctor turned these elegant bedrooms into sickrooms, caring for the ill beneath crystal chandeliers and painted ceilings. Locals still whisper that many who entered never left again, leaving the house with a legacy of both generosity and sorrow.
