High in the remote mountains of Japan’s Shikoku Island, we set out on a journey to find the abandoned home of a renowned calligraphy family.

The road to get there was tough winding, overgrown, and nearly forgotten. This part of the island has been slowly emptied out over the years, and only silence remains.

Inside the house, it felt like time had stopped. Generations of brushes, inkstones, and awards were still left behind preserving the legacy of a family deeply rooted in the art of shodō, Japanese calligraphy.

But in the son’s bedroom, we discovered something completely unexpected: North Korean flags, propaganda books, and even a pennant from Pyongyang University. Why it was there? We still don’t know.

This is the story of a forgotten home and the family that once lived here.
An ode to Japanese tradition, and a mystery that still lingers in the mountains.
