STORY
Hidden deep within the mountainous forests of Saitama lies a forgotten relic of Japan’s post-war era, a modest two-story home, abandoned since the 1960s. Overgrown pines lean into its weathered roofline, and the narrow roads that once connected it to the outside world are now barely passable.
This house belonged to a typical Japanese family. The father was a devoted salaryman, employed by a local construction company that has since vanished. His wife managed the household, raising children within these quiet walls. For decades, life here followed a familiar rhythm, structured, modest, and grounded in tradition.
Constructed during Japan’s rapid economic growth, the home blends traditional features such as tatami floors and sliding shōji doors with Western influences that were fashionable at the time, including red brick walls and steel-framed windows. Signs of everyday life still linger, from faded family photographs to cookware resting where it was last used, all untouched, as if time simply stopped.
The house was likely left behind as the younger generation sought opportunity in the city, leaving the old home to fade into memory. Now, it stands as a peaceful time capsule, slowly surrendering to the forest that surrounds it.
This is more than just an abandoned building. It’s a glimpse into the quiet, structured life of a family whose story might otherwise have been forgotten.
