An interview with Dr. Christèle Barois, a post-doctoral research fellow on the AYURYOG project, about yoga and medicine in the Dharmaputrikā, the "Little Daughter of Dharma."

Dr Barois is a Sanskrist at the University of Vienna, who specialises in premodern Tantric Śaivism, Puranic literature, medicine (Ayurveda) and Yoga. Specifically, she has been working on a critical edition and translation on the Dharmaputrikā, an early work on Yoga that provides very interesting connections between Yoga and medicine.

The Dharmaputrikā includes elaborate descriptions of methods to overcome obstacles to success in Yoga as well as methods to resolve diseases that may arise due to the negligence, which make it a very unique text.

We discuss, amongst other things, the following:

• What does the name ‘Dharmaputrikā’ mean? Who do you think the text was written for?

• What are some of the extraordinary features of the Yoga it teaches?

• Do any of its teachings or techniques anticipate those of early Haṭha Yoga?

• The practical value of the chapter on cikitsā (therapy) in the Dharmaputrikā.
