This video shows a reconstruction of a recipe from the Rasaratnākara for making rubies. In this recipe, the "fish black" (matsyakajjala) made previously (see: youtu.be/cygCZkpnn6M ) is applied as a dye to various mineral stones. The guidelines for making artificial rubies (Rasaratnākara Vādakhaṇḍa 19. 5cd-6) are the first in a series of instructions on how to create gems.
