Unmasking Fear: The Hidden Face of Disengagement
Fear hides as disengagement. Fear doesn't usually show. Fear doesn't usually show up as fear. It hides in silence. Indifference, minimal effort, emotional distance,
disengagement is fear that has lost hope, not courage. And this matters because leaders often misread fear as attitude. They see someone pulling back and assume they don't care. When in reality, caring has become too costly. There is something I've named again and again in flipping the format on the fear of failure.
Fear starts out adaptive before it becomes destructive. I've watched it happen inside radio stations. People check out long before they leave, and I've lived seasons myself where disappointment and overload made withdrawal feels safer than hope. When you understand this, you stop shaming fear and you start reading it accurately.
