Premium status is unlocked by buying something from the store. It can be anything for any price. You are then asked to thank someone for helping you. They're rewarded with the Professor Speks. The person you thank is not required to have coached you in the past. The only requirement for rewarding said person is that they are on your friends list or in the server you are playing on.
As a word of warning, the alert will not return after closing it so make sure the person you intend to thank is already on your friends list before unlocking premium.
