The University of North Texas is cutting or consolidating more than 70 programs, minors and certificates as it closes a $45 million budget shortfall, including tapering down its linguistics degrees and nixing a women and gender studies master’s program.
The cuts are the first signs of how UNT plans to close the deficit, which it says is largely driven by a sharp decline in international students, who pay significantly higher tuition, along with reduced state funding.
University leaders recently warned that the shortfall would lead to program consolidations, faculty buyouts and higher teaching loads.
