New food stamp restrictions that prohibit Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients from using benefits to purchase sweetened beverages and candy went into effect starting April 1 in Texas. The restrictions come from Senate Bill 379, which is one of three bills under Texas’ “Make America Healthy Again” initiative that Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law last year.
