Come along with Penn Rail Videos as we give you a sample of mountain railroading in the state of Oregon. We visit the Blue Mountains, home to Union Pacific's La Grande Subdivision.
In this video, we cover from Pendleton, Oregon to La Grande, Oregon. We'll see trains climbing up the mountain using helper locomotives, known as "DPUs", or "distributed power units". These helpers are remote controlled from the lead locomotive. We'll see a train that has a mid-train DPU, and then another on the rear! Stack trains are very common in this clip, however we do catch a manifest tackling the eastern portion of the hill. The top of the hill, Kamela, OR is featured as well.
You'll really see how steep these grades are here in the Blue Mountains of Oregon, and how train after train conquers them. This is Union Pacific's La Grande Subdivision in the Blue Mountains.
