There’s a magnetism to Undertale which brings a player back to it again and again. Despite how clever its systems are, and funny its writing is, and despite its appeal spiralling out of control and turning into a meme of itself, it’s the charm of the world which concentrates a player’s attention and makes you feel homely and cosy while playing.
The game is a slow burn, and I would argue that it doesn’t really get going and start bearing its true colours until you meet Sans and Papyrus, because Papyrus is precious.
But Toby Fox uses every trick in the book to make you fall in love with the world and understand what it’s going to ask of you in its first ten minutes. And if his magic spell works on you, and you do understand what’s going on… then you already know why players of Undertale were, and still are, obsessed with this game.
