LLNL’s Data Science Institute (DSI) was established in 2018 to enable excellence in data science research and applications across the Lab’s core missions. Statistician Amanda Muyskens, PhD, describes MuyGPs, her team’s innovative and computationally efficient Gaussian Process hyperparameter estimation method for large data. The method has been applied to space-based image classification and released for open-source use in the Python package MuyGPyS. MuyGPs will help astronomers and astrophysicists working with the massive amounts of data gathered from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), as well as numerous other laboratory and science applications. Learn more about the Data Science Institute at data-science.llnl.gov/.
