The Stern Lab at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry primarily focuses on trying to understand the complex choreography of cells as they organize during early animal development.

The lab is led by Tomer Stern, an assistant professor of computational biology in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences & Prosthodontics, and utilizes two different model systems: the mouse skeletal system, to understand how hundreds of cartilage and bone morphologies are formed during early development and in genetic skeletal disorders; and the early fruit fly embryo, to study how cell movements are coordinated during the developmental stage.
