Materials vaporized by a nuclear explosion do not simply disappear without a trace in the resulting fireball. Leftover bomb materials and fission products remain, but these interact with the surrounding environment in complicated ways, making it difficult for scientists to unravel what happened in the explosion. To better understand the complex chemical behavior occurring in the cooling fireball, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researchers use a plasma flow reactor.
