Found this underground wild beehive among the wattle trees in Sydney, Various bees leave their rooftop hives because they are either badly kept or too full.
These are reasonably tame but would probably have leaved a managed hive for one of the two previous reasons.
The box is simply a swarm trap for when they decide to move.
